What is LED light therapy?
Transform your cellular health with Celluma.
What is light therapy?
Light therapy is the application of specific wavelengths of light energy to tissue in order to achieve a therapeutic benefit.
The energy emitted is then used to improve cell performance. Light therapy can be carried out with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or cold lasers and has a variety of applications in many medical fields.
It has been extensively researched and is supported by thousands of peer-reviewed and published clinical research papers from renowned institutions around the world. Other terms by which light therapy is known are photobiostimulation, photobiomodulation, photomedicine, LED light therapy, low-level light therapy (LLLT), red light therapy, cold and soft LASER therapy. All terms are correct, have the same meaning and are used to describe the delivery of light energy to treat a variety of medical and cosmetic conditions.
The treatment is non-invasive, painless, requires no recovery time and can be used safely on all skin types.
About the Celluma SERIES
FDA-approved for pain management and skin care , Celluma's LED light therapy devices use specific wavelengths of light energy to improve cell health by accelerating the repair and replenishment of damaged tissue cells. While similar devices on the market claim to do the same, they often require multiple panels and accessories to treat specific conditions or accommodate different body parts. From compact handheld units to large whole-body light therapy devices, the Celluma SERIES offers practical solutions in a variety of versatile, affordable all-in-one systems.
How it works
Just as plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into energy, high-intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that use specific, proven wavelengths of light can trigger a natural biostimulatory effect in human tissue. Research has shown that LED light therapy can increase blood flow, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, reduce inflammation, improve skin tone, texture and clarity, reduce wrinkles under the eyes, and relieve muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasms and pain associated with arthritis.
Research indicates that cells absorb light particles (photons) and convert their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy used by cells. The resulting increase in ATP is then used to speed up metabolic processes, synthesise DNA, RNA, proteins, enzymes and other products needed to repair or regenerate cell components, promote mitosis or cell proliferation and restore homeostasis. Simply put, the LED light source provides additional energy to the damaged cells so that the performance of the cells is improved. Fibroblast cells, for example, will increase collagen and elastin production in connective tissue to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and increase the rate of wound healing.
Celluma versatility
The patented pulse wave technology controlled by proprietary software algorithms contributes to the applicability of Celluma light therapy. With the exception of the Celluma CLEAR (emits only blue and red) for the treatment of acne, all Celluma devices are polychromatic, emitting blue (465 nm), red (640 nm) and infrared (880 nm) light energy simultaneously to safely treat a wide range of conditions in both professional and home settings easily and cost-effectively. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signalling mechanism for various cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and kill bacteria, while others promote local blood flow.
...Reported mechanisms of light-induced effects include modulation of prostaglandin levels, alteration of somatosensory evoked potential and nerve conduction velocity, and hypermia of treated tissue. 1"

Therapeutic Light
Shedding light on the Celluma difference
There is a wide range of optical parameters required to induce cellular responses for desired therapeutic outcomes. These specific and proven requirements for effective light therapy start with choosing the right wavelengths: Blue, Red and Near Infrared. These are the wavelengths most supported by credible scientific research for the effective application of low-level light therapy. Optimal energy delivery and treatment parameters are also critical components. The importance of device placement and proximity to tissue is an aspect of LED light therapy that is often misunderstood and rarely explained effectively. The key to effectiveness is to place the light emissions as close to the skin as possible to ensure optimal energy absorption. Based on Celluma's patented shape-shifting design, no other LED device is able to position better or easier than Celluma.
We know, based on the inverse square law of optical physics, that proximity to the treatment area is the key to effectiveness. This law applies to all light therapy devices. To compensate for the distance factor, early LED devices were built on what are now considered obsolete platforms and had to resort to various strategies, including increasing the number of LEDs or increasing the output power. These tactics, however, do not compensate for the distance they travel from the skin, but they do dramatically increase the cost of these bulky devices. The key to the effectiveness of light therapy is not how much energy is delivered from a device or how many LEDs are present, but how much energy is available for absorption by the tissue.
The inverse square law states that certain forces on an object vary by the inverse square of the distance between the object and the source of the force. Light energy obeys this law. For example, an object placed three inches away from a light source receives only one-ninth as much energy as an object one inch away from the light. Simply put, and following the principles of the inverse square law, we understand that the closer the light energy is emitted to the skin, the more energy is absorbed and the faster and better results you will see. What exactly does this mean for you and how do you use this information to optimise results?
Today's advances in LED technology allow Celluma to produce devices that utilise the inverse square law. Celluma's devices are flexible and dimensionally stable in design, so they can be closely adapted to the treatment area. In use, this means faster, better and longer lasting results for you, your clients and your patients. Essentially, Celluma or any light therapy device further away from the skin does not become ineffective, just less effective.
In addition, Celluma's contour design allows for easy treatment of areas previously considered "uncomfortable" such as elbows, shoulders or ankles. The modality is hands-free and free-standing and requires no supervision during the treatment session.
See how Celluma compares to other light therapy devices. The difference is uniquely clear. Celluma is:
- Safe, clinically proven, FDA-certified and medically CE-marked
- Non-toxic, non-invasive
- Affordable alternative to medicines and harsh topical solutions
- Corresponds exactly to the treatment area for optimal effectiveness in contrast to other LED units

Why is FDA approval important for you?
The FDA regulates all "medical claims" made by device manufacturers. Accordingly, before a device manufacturer can legally make medical claims, those claims must be reviewed by the FDA for both effectiveness and safety. The FDA does not test the devices itself, but it does thoroughly analyse the data submitted by the manufacturers or "sponsors" to ensure that the claims about the device are considered substantiated and that the users of the devices can expect effective and safe performance relative to the claims.
Getting a medical light therapy device "approved" by the FDA is a rigorous, time-consuming and expensive process. Medical device manufacturers seeking FDA approval demonstrate to the public their commitment to providing safe and effective products. In essence, they are putting their money where their mouth is. Thus, medical devices that receive FDA approval are manufactured by companies that have the public interest in mind and are not trying to circumvent federal regulations by putting their products on the market.
When you choose FDA-approved medical devices, you can be confident that appropriate regulation and regulatory oversight has been conducted. FDA approval means that the effectiveness and safety of the device you have purchased has been confirmed when used as intended. For a medical device to receive FDA approval, every component of the device must pass inspection - including all sources, suppliers and manufacturers. Without FDA regulation, neither the device itself nor its suppliers are held accountable for quality control or manufacturing standards, resulting in a product that may be significantly less effective and often significantly less safe than FDA-approved devices.
Celluma is also CE marked in the European Union as a Class IIa medical device for skin wound healing and is the only device of its kind to achieve this status.
